Born in 1962 in Sichuan Province, Zhuang Hong-Yi is considered one of the most influential artists in China. His unique body of work is shaped by the fusion of his Chinese heritage with European influences. By embracing his present without losing his past, Zhuang defines an identity between two worlds and tells this deeply personal story visually. His works balance controlled planning, emotional gestures, and meticulous refinement, resulting in creations of beauty, surprise, and curiosity. Zhuang is renowned for his powerful use of color and his recurring, exquisitely crafted floral motifs, which serve as universal symbols of prosperity and optimism. The consistent return to this theme throughout his oeuvre reflects his ongoing process of refinement and experimentation, oscillating between raw emotion and consciously orchestrated artistry.

Over the past decades, Zhuang has gained international recognition. His sculptural paintings have been showcased in over 100 exhibitions worldwide, including prestigious solo exhibitions at the Found Museum in Beijing (China), the Groninger Museum (Netherlands), the Ulm Museum (Germany), the Erarta Museum (Russia), and the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 (Italy). Zhuang began his artistic training at the Sichuan College of Fine Arts in China before relocating to the Netherlands in 1992, where he continued his studies at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. His profound inspiration from the blossoms of nature can be traced back to the moment he first encountered the famous tulip fields in the Dutch landscape – an impression that continues to form the foundation of his artistic practice today. Currently, he divides his time between his studio in China and his residence in Switzerland.
